The Orangerie & the Palace
Schönbrunn was the Habsburgs’ summer residence, rebuilt in the 1740s under Maria Theresa into the 1,441-room baroque palace that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Its Orangerie, built around 1755, has a place of its own in musical history: in February 1786 Emperor Joseph II staged a contest here between his two court composers, with Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor and Salieri’s Prima la musica e poi le parole performed at opposite ends of the hall. The concerts take place where that evening did.
Getting There & Visiting
The palace is at Schönbrunner Schlossstrasse 47, 1130 Vienna, west of the centre.
- U-Bahn: the U4 to Schönbrunn — about fifteen minutes from Karlsplatz — then a short walk to the palace.
- Timing: arrive for dinner at 18:30. If you come earlier, the palace park is free to walk in.
There is no enforced dress code: smart casual is fine, and many guests dress up a little for dinner in the palace.
