New Year in the Golden Hall

Once a year, on the first morning of January, the Vienna Philharmonic plays the most-watched classical concert on earth from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein — waltzes and polkas of the Strauss dynasty, flowers banking the stage, and an audience of millions following the broadcast around the world. For the lucky couple of thousand in the room, it is simply one of the great occasions civilisation offers.

What many visitors don’t realise: the famous concert is actually three concerts. The identical programme is performed three times across the turn of the year — the Preview Performance on the morning of 30 December, the New Year’s Eve Concert on the evening of 31 December, and the celebrated New Year’s Concert itself on the morning of 1 January. Same orchestra, same hall, same programme; three chances to be in the room.

How Tickets Really Work

Demand for these concerts exceeds the Golden Hall’s capacity many times over, and the Philharmonic allocates its own tickets by an annual ballot — entered by far more people than can ever win. That is where we come in: as an independent Viennese ticket agency we source tickets to all three performances, listed above with live availability. Two tickets are always seated together unless the listing says otherwise, and prices — which include our service fee and are above original face value, as with any agency for these dates — currently range from €350 for the Preview Performance to the top categories for 1 January. Our complete guide to the New Year’s Concert covers the history, the programme traditions and which of the three dates suits which visitor.

Collection is refreshingly simple: our office at Opernring 1 — directly opposite the State Opera, ten minutes’ walk from the Musikverein — hands you your tickets on the day before or the day of the performance. New Year in Vienna deserves a plan: the dress code guide will tell you this is the one date the city truly dresses for. Two more for the plan: where to stay near the opera and the Musikverein, and if you are in Vienna for a few days, the State Opera’s winter season runs right through the holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the three New Year concerts?

The programme is identical across all three: the Preview Performance (30 December, morning), the New Year’s Eve Concert (31 December, evening) and the New Year’s Concert (1 January, late morning) — the one broadcast worldwide. The 1 January date is the most sought-after; the Preview offers the same music at the gentlest prices of the three.

Why are New Year’s Concert tickets so expensive?

The Golden Hall holds only a couple of thousand people, worldwide demand is enormous, and the Philharmonic’s own allocation is decided by ballot. Tickets on the open market — through any agency — therefore trade well above face value. Our prices include our service fee and are shown in full on each listing before you book.

What music is played?

The heart of the programme is always the waltzes, polkas and marches of the Strauss family and their contemporaries, with the running order announced by the Philharmonic ahead of each New Year. Tradition holds two famous encores for the very end of the 1 January concert — if you know, you know; if you don’t, we won’t spoil it.

What should I wear?

This is Vienna’s dressiest date — evening wear is widespread at all three performances, especially on 31 December and 1 January. See our dress code guide.

How do I get my tickets?

Collection from our office at Opernring 1/E/536-537, directly opposite the State Opera, on the day of the performance or the day before (13:00–17:00, Sundays 15:00–18:00). E-tickets are sent in advance where available for a listing.

ONE EVENT is an independent ticket agency. All tickets offered are genuine and valid, but we are not the official box office of the Vienna State Opera. Prices include our service fee and may be higher than the original face value. We are independent of, and not affiliated with, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Musikverein.
