L'Orfeo at the Vienna State Opera

The beginning of opera. Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo was first performed at the ducal court of Mantua in February 1607, and it is the earliest opera still regularly staged: Orpheus, the singer whose music can move stones, loses Euridice to a snakebite on their wedding day, sings his way past Charon into the underworld, wins her back from Pluto and Proserpina on one condition — that he not look at her on the way out — and looks. Four centuries on, the music is startlingly direct: a toccata of brass to open, dances for the wedding, the messenger’s terrible news, and Orfeo’s great plea to the boatman, Possente spirto.

The Vienna State Opera plays it in Tom Morris’s production, first seen at the house in 2022, which begins as if the whole theatre were the wedding party: sets and costumes by Anna Fleischle, lighting by James Farncombe, video by Nina Dunn and movement by Jane Gibson. In the pit, the Concentus Musicus Wien — the period-instrument ensemble founded by Nikolaus Harnoncourt — under Stefan Gottfried. Two parts with one interval, sung in Italian with seat-screen subtitles in English.

Before You Go

Timing. Two parts of about an hour each with a 25-minute interval — roughly 2 h 25 min in all; all four performances start at 19:00 and finish before 21:30. Doors open well before curtain-up and the house asks latecomers to wait for a suitable break, so plan to be seated ten minutes early. Our guide to how long an opera lasts covers intervals and curtain times in general.

Seats, subtitles, dress. The seating guide walks through the Parkett, the boxes, the Balkon and the Galerie; L’Orfeo is sung in Italian with seat-screen subtitles in English and German (and six more languages) — our subtitles guide shows how they work. There is no enforced dress code — smart casual is the everyday norm and premieres and New Year’s Eve draw evening wear — see what to wear.

Around the performance. Monteverdi on period instruments is a different sound from the house’s usual orchestra — quieter, closer, more intimate — so the middle categories reward you more than usual; the seating guide explains where. The season guide puts this run beside the autumn’s Verdi and Mozart. Staying nearby makes a late finish easy: our hotels guide lists what is within a few minutes’ walk of Opernring. Every other production on sale this season is on the Vienna State Opera page and in the 2026/27 season guide.

L'Orfeo Tickets: FAQs

How long is L'Orfeo at the Vienna State Opera?

About 2 hours 25 minutes: two parts of around an hour each with a 25-minute interval. All four performances start at 19:00.

Who is singing Orfeo in Vienna?

Rolando Villazón, with Florina Ilie as Euridice, Nadezhda Karyazina as La Musica and Wolfgang Bankl as Charon, conducted by Stefan Gottfried with the period-instrument Concentus Musicus Wien, on 25, 28 and 31 October and 3 November 2026. Casts can change; checked 15 October 2026.

What language is L'Orfeo in?

Italian. Every seat has a subtitle screen with English and German, plus Italian, French, Russian, Japanese, Spanish and Chinese.

Is L'Orfeo a good first opera?

A surprising one: short, with a story everyone knows and a staging that opens the whole house as a wedding. The sound is early-baroque — lutes, cornetts, harpsichords rather than a romantic orchestra — so it suits people who like their music lean and close rather than lush.

How much are L'Orfeo tickets?

Listed with us from €74 (Category 6) to €309 (Category 1) across the run, with the middle categories around €140–197. Prices include our service fee and may be above the original face value; each date shows its own.

Do I choose a specific seat?

You book by category and we assign the best available seats within it. Two seats are always seated together unless a listing says otherwise; larger groups may be split, for example 2+2 or 3+1. Our seating guide explains what each part of the house is like.

How do I receive my tickets?

Tickets are collected from our office at ONE EVENT, Opernring 1/E/536-537, 1010 Vienna, directly opposite the Vienna State Opera, on the day of the performance or one day prior (13:00–17:00, Sundays 15:00–18:00). Where e-tickets are available, we send them by email instead. The house issues tickets about a week before the performance; your booking is confirmed when you buy.

Can I cancel or get a refund?

As stated in our Terms & Conditions, tickets are non-refundable and cannot be cancelled after purchase, so double-check your date and category before you confirm. Our Vienna office is happy to help with any question about your booking.
