What You’ll Hear
Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons — the four violin concertos every listener knows, played the way the eighteenth century heard them: on original period instruments, by Ensemble 1756, an orchestra founded in 2006, Mozart’s 250th birthday year, which now runs concert series in Salzburg and Vienna. The programme pairs the Seasons with Geminiani’s Concerto Grosso “La Folia”, and the church’s long, warm acoustic does the rest.
There is a reason this music belongs in this room. Antonio Vivaldi spent the last months of his life in Vienna, died here in July 1741, and was buried in a cemetery that lay beside the Karlskirche.

The Karlskirche: History & Architecture
In 1713, a year after Vienna’s last great plague epidemic, Emperor Charles VI vowed to build a church to St Charles Borromeo, the patron of plague sufferers. The design competition was won by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach; building began in 1716 and was completed in 1737 by his son Joseph Emanuel. The result is the city’s baroque masterpiece: a dome rising some 70 metres, its interior covered by Johann Michael Rottmayr’s fresco of the saint’s intercession, and outside, two great columns carved by Lorenzo Mattielli with scenes from Borromeo’s life, modelled on Trajan’s Column in Rome.
Getting There & Visiting
The Karlskirche stands on Karlsplatz, 1040 Vienna, a five-minute walk from the State Opera and across the square from the Musikverein.
- U-Bahn: Karlsplatz station, served by the U1, U2 and U4 lines.
- Tram: the Ring trams — lines 1, 2, 71 and D — stop at Oper / Karlsplatz, a few minutes on foot.
Dress is relaxed — smart casual is fine everywhere in Vienna’s churches, and a warm layer is wise in winter. Arrive in good time to find your place before the music begins.
