Browse Dates & BookVerdi’s Shakespeare: a storm, a victorious general, a wife who married him against her father’s wishes, and an ensign, Iago, who sets out to destroy him with a handkerchief and a whisper. Otello was Verdi’s return to the stage after sixteen years, first performed at La Scala in February 1887 to Arrigo Boito’s libretto, and it is the summit of Italian tragic opera — the chorus in the hurricane, Iago’s Credo, the love duet under the stars, Desdemona’s Willow Song and Ave Maria before the end. The title role is the most demanding in the tenor repertoire.
The Vienna State Opera plays it in Adrian Noble’s production, with sets and costumes by Dick Bird, stage effects by Basil Twist and lighting by Jean Kalman. Four acts in two halves, sung in Italian with seat-screen subtitles in English. Bertrand de Billy conducts the five performances, all at 19:00.
One cast is announced for the whole run.
Casts and conductors as announced by the Vienna State Opera on 15 October 2026. The house can change them at short notice; the names on the day are the ones that count.
At the Vienna State Opera you book by price category rather than a numbered seat: Category 1 is the front of the Parkett and the central boxes, the numbers rise as the seats move back and up, and we reserve the best available places within the category you choose. With Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, the run is listed at the upper end of the house’s standard range. Tickets for Otello are listed with us from €97 to €358 by category across the run; the bands below show what each typically costs.
Prices as listed with us on 15 October 2026; each date shows its own categories and current prices. All prices include our service fee and may be above the original face value printed on the ticket. Categories 7 to 9 are restricted-view places, offered only when the house releases them. Standing room is sold by the house on the day and never through an agency.

Timing. Acts 1 and 2 run about 75 minutes, the interval 30, Acts 3 and 4 about 75 — roughly three hours, so the 19:00 performances finish around 22:00. Doors open well before curtain-up and the house asks latecomers to wait for a suitable break, so plan to be seated ten minutes early. Our guide to how long an opera lasts covers intervals and curtain times in general.
Seats, subtitles, dress. The seating guide walks through the Parkett, the boxes, the Balkon and the Galerie; Otello is sung in Italian with seat-screen subtitles in English and German (and six more languages) — our subtitles guide shows how they work. There is no enforced dress code — smart casual is the everyday norm and premieres and New Year’s Eve draw evening wear — see what to wear.
Around the performance. Verdi is the house’s autumn theme this season — the season guide puts Otello beside Don Carlo and Luisa Miller — and the daytime tours show the house from the stage side. Staying nearby makes a late finish easy: our hotels guide lists what is within a few minutes’ walk of Opernring. Every other production on sale this season is on the Vienna State Opera page and in the 2026/27 season guide.
ONE EVENT is an independent ticket agency. All tickets offered are genuine and valid, but we are not the official box office of the Vienna State Opera. Prices include our service fee and may be higher than the original face value. The full total is always shown before you pay.
About three hours: Acts 1 and 2 (around 75 minutes), a 30-minute interval, then Acts 3 and 4 (around 75 minutes). All five performances start at 19:00.
Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role, with Nicole Car as Desdemona and Luca Salsi as Iago, conducted by Bertrand de Billy, on 26 and 29 October and 2, 5 and 8 November 2026. Casts can change; checked 15 October 2026.
Italian. Every seat has a subtitle screen with English and German, plus Italian, French, Russian, Japanese, Spanish and Chinese.
It is a magnificent evening but a dark one: a tragedy that ends with a murder, with no light relief. If it is your first opera, Verdi’s drama grips from the opening storm and the story is Shakespeare’s, so you know where it goes; for something gentler, see the comedies on the season guide.
Listed with us from €97 (Category 6) to €358 (Category 1) across the run, with the middle categories around €132–252. Prices include our service fee and may be above the original face value; each date shows its own.
You book by category and we assign the best available seats within it. Two seats are always seated together unless a listing says otherwise; larger groups may be split, for example 2+2 or 3+1. Our seating guide explains what each part of the house is like.
Tickets are collected from our office at ONE EVENT, Opernring 1/E/536-537, 1010 Vienna, directly opposite the Vienna State Opera, on the day of the performance or one day prior (13:00–17:00, Sundays 15:00–18:00). Where e-tickets are available, we send them by email instead. The house issues tickets about a week before the performance; your booking is confirmed when you buy.
As stated in our Terms & Conditions, tickets are non-refundable and cannot be cancelled after purchase, so double-check your date and category before you confirm. Our Vienna office is happy to help with any question about your booking.
