Seating Categories & Ticket Prices

At the Vienna State Opera you book by category rather than a single fixed seat — choose Parkett (ground-floor stalls), a box (Loge), the Balkon or the Gallery, and we reserve the best available seats within your chosen category. Prices vary by performance and date; all prices include our service fee and may be higher than the original face value, and the exact price is always confirmed at checkout. The categories below show what each typically costs.

Indicative price bands for typically listed categories (approx. €31–315). All prices include our service fee and may be above the original face value printed on the ticket. Premiere, gala and weekend performances sit at the top of each band; the full total is shown at checkout.

Choosing your category

For the closest view, choose Parkett — the ground-floor stalls facing the stage. A box (Loge) offers a more private, atmospheric setting on the lower tiers. The Balkon gives strong head-on views at a mid-range price, while the Gallery is the most affordable, high up with a sweeping view. Whichever category you pick, we reserve the best available seats within it, and every seat has a seat-back translation screen so you can follow the libretto throughout.

How to Buy Vienna State Opera Tickets

Buying as an international visitor is straightforward, and you do not need to speak German — the whole process is in English.

  1. Pick your date from the schedule above — opera, ballet or concert.
  2. Choose your category — Parkett, a box, Balkon or Gallery — and we reserve the best available seats in it.
  3. Check out securely — pay by card in a few minutes; our service fee is included and the full total is shown before you confirm.
  4. Collect your tickets from our office directly opposite the opera house — on the day of the performance or one day prior. Where e-tickets are available for your event, we’ll send them by email instead.

When to book

Popular titles, premieres and weekend performances during peak travel months sell out first, so book ahead once your dates are fixed. Reserving early gives you the widest choice of categories.

Standing room

The Vienna State Opera keeps a long standing-room (Stehplatz) tradition, with a limited number of places sold on the day of the performance. These are released by the State Opera’s own box office — typically around 80 minutes before the curtain — and are not part of the inventory available here. For a guaranteed place on a specific date, a seated category booked in advance is the more reliable option.

Collecting your tickets

Tickets are collected from our office at ONE EVENT, Opernring 1/E/536-537, 1010 Vienna — directly opposite the Vienna State Opera — either on the day of the performance or one day prior.

ONE EVENT · Opernring 1/E/536-537, 1010 Vienna

You’ll find us in the passage between L’opéra Restaurant and Kaiser’s – Kaiserschmarrn: take the left elevators in the Opernringhof building to the 5th floor. The short video below shows the way.

Important Information

  • Guaranteed seating — two seats are always seated together, unless explicitly stated otherwise (for example “Separate Seats”).
  • Seat selection — specific seats cannot be chosen. Tickets are booked by category, and the exact seats are assigned as the best available within that category.
  • Group bookings — for more than two tickets, seating may be split. For example: 3 tickets → 3 or 2+1 · 4 tickets → 4, 2+2, 3+1 or 2+1+1 · 5 tickets → 5, 4+1, 3+2, 2+2+1 or 2+1+1+1.
  • Pricing — all prices include our service fee and may be above the original face value printed on the ticket.
  • Cancellation — as stated in our Terms & Conditions, tickets are non-refundable and cannot be cancelled after purchase.

Vienna State Opera Dress Code

There is no strict, enforced dress code at the Vienna State Opera. Smart, elegant clothing is the norm, and evening wear is always welcome — but you will not be turned away for dressing simply neatly, and well-groomed casual is widely accepted, especially in standing room. Most guests in the stalls and boxes opt for business or cocktail attire; smarter casual is common in the upper levels.

As a guide: aim for smart-casual at a minimum, lean dressier for the Parkett and boxes, and keep it relaxed in the Gallery. Avoid beachwear, sportswear and flip-flops. For premieres, galas and the Opera Ball, expect a genuinely formal occasion — the Opera Ball in particular calls for white tie and floor-length gowns during Vienna’s ball season.

What to Expect: Programme, Repertoire & the Ensemble

The Vienna State Opera runs a true repertory system, with a different production almost every night across a season of roughly 350 performances. The programme spans the great opera repertoire — Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Strauss and beyond — alongside the Vienna State Ballet, which shares the stage throughout the season.

The pit is filled by the musicians of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra — the ensemble from whose ranks the Vienna Philharmonic draws its members. The Philharmonic performs the famous New Year’s Concert at the Musikverein’s Golden Hall each 1 January.

Since Herbert von Karajan’s era, performances are sung in their original language. To help you follow the story, the house provides individual electronic translation displays — typically seat-back screens — offering several languages including German and English (and others such as Italian, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese). Availability can vary by performance. Browse our wider classical concerts and sibling venues such as the Volksoper Wien.

History & Architecture of the Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera opened on 25 May 1869 as the first major monumental building completed on Vienna’s grand Ringstrasse boulevard, inaugurated with a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Designed in the Neo-Renaissance (Renaissance Revival) style by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, the house is celebrated for its ceremonial grand marble staircase and its richly decorated Schwind Foyer, named for the frescoes by Moritz von Schwind.

The building was heavily damaged by bombing on 12 March 1945, in the final months of the Second World War. After a decade of reconstruction it reopened on 5 November 1955 with Beethoven’s Fidelio, conducted by Karl Böhm — a performance that became a symbol of post-war Austria’s cultural revival. Today it remains one of the busiest opera houses in the world, staging more than 350 performances each season.

Getting There & Visiting

The Vienna State Opera stands at Opernring 2, 1010 Vienna, on the Ringstrasse, with the Hotel Sacher immediately to the rear (Philharmonikerstrasse 4) — one of the easiest landmarks in the city to find.

By public transport

  • U-Bahn: Karlsplatz station, served by the U1, U2 and U4 lines, is a short walk away.
  • Tram: the Ring trams — lines 1, 2, 71, D (and 62) — stop at Oper / Kärntner Ring right outside.

On the night

Arrive in good time: latecomers are typically admitted only during a suitable break in the performance, not after the curtain rises. A cloakroom is available, and the house offers facilities for visitors with reduced mobility — contact the venue in advance to arrange assistance.

Nearby

The opera sits among Vienna’s headline sights: the Hotel Sacher (home of the original Sachertorte) is just behind it, the Albertina museum is a short stroll away, and the Kärntner Strasse shopping street runs from beside the opera up to St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom).

How do I receive my tickets?

Tickets are collected from our office at ONE EVENT, Opernring 1/E/536-537, 1010 Vienna — directly opposite the Vienna State Opera — on the day of the performance or one day prior. Collection hours are 13:00–17:00, and 15:00–18:00 on Sundays. Do I choose a specific seat?

You book by category — Parkett, a box (Loge), Balkon or Gallery — and we assign the best available seats within that category. Two seats are always seated together unless explicitly stated otherwise (for example “Separate Seats”). For groups of more than two, seating may be split — for example 4 tickets may be seated as 4 together, 2+2, 3+1 or 2+1+1.

Can I cancel or get a refund?

As stated in our Terms & Conditions, tickets are non-refundable and cannot be cancelled after purchase — so double-check your date and category before you confirm. If you have a question about your booking, our Vienna office is happy to help.

Are standing-room tickets available?

The Vienna State Opera keeps its famous standing-room (Stehplatz) tradition, with a limited number of places sold on the day of each performance by the State Opera’s own box office, typically released around 80 minutes before the curtain. These are not part of the inventory available on this page; for a guaranteed place on a specific date, book a seated category in advance.

What is the dress code at the Vienna State Opera?

There is no strict, enforced dress code. Smart, elegant clothing is the norm and evening wear is welcome, while well-groomed casual is widely accepted, especially in standing room; the stalls and boxes tend to be dressier than the upper levels. Avoid sportswear and beachwear. Premieres, galas and the Opera Ball are formal occasions, with the Opera Ball calling for white tie and floor-length gowns.

Does the Vienna State Opera stage both opera and ballet?

Yes. The house presents the full opera repertoire alongside the Vienna State Ballet, which performs on the same stage throughout the September–June season.

Are performances in German? Are there English translations?

Operas are performed in their original language — often Italian, German or French. The house provides individual electronic translation displays (typically seat-back screens) offering several languages, including German and English, so you can follow the story throughout. Available languages can vary by performance.

How early should I book Vienna State Opera tickets?

Book ahead for marquee titles, weekend performances and the high travel season, when the best categories sell out first. Once your dates are set, reserving early gives you the widest choice.

Where is the Vienna State Opera and how do I get there?

It is at Opernring 2, 1010 Vienna, on the Ringstrasse, with the Hotel Sacher immediately behind it. Take the U-Bahn to Karlsplatz (U1, U2, U4) or the Ring trams 1, 2, 71 or D to the Oper stop, both moments from the entrance.

Is ONE EVENT the official Vienna State Opera box office?

No. ONE EVENT is an independent ticket agency. All tickets offered are genuine and valid, but we are not the official box office of the Vienna State Opera. Prices include our service fee and may be higher than the original face value; the full total is always shown before you pay. Official face-value tickets and standing-room places are sold by the venue’s own box office.
