What Plays in the Great Hall

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1900 as the Wiener Concertverein, the Wiener Symphoniker is the city’s own concert orchestra and the Konzerthaus’s resident ensemble, dividing its season between this hall and the Musikverein. Its Great Hall evenings are the backbone of the schedule on this page.

The Vienna Philharmonic

The Philharmonic’s home is the Musikverein, but it appears in the Great Hall on selected dates each season. Our guide to hearing the Vienna Philharmonic explains how its tickets work.

The other halls

Chamber music, recitals and smaller ensembles play in the house’s other rooms — the Mozart Hall and the Schubert Hall, listed separately on this site. Browse the wider classical concerts calendar for everything on in the city.

  2. Choose your category and we reserve the best available places within it.
  3. Check out securely — pay by card in a few minutes; our service fee is included and the full total is shown before you confirm. Your booking is confirmed at purchase; the tickets themselves are issued in the week before the concert.

The Konzerthaus: History & Architecture

The Wiener Konzerthaus opened on 19 October 1913, designed by the theatre architects Fellner & Helmer with Ludwig Baumann in the Art Nouveau manner of the day. It was conceived as a house for a broader public and a broader repertoire than the older Musikverein, and it still works that way: four halls under one roof — the Great Hall with around 1,840 seats, the Mozart Hall, the Schubert Hall and the Berio Hall, added in the renovation of 1997–2000 — and resident ensembles from the Vienna Symphony to the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Wiener Singakademie and Klangforum Wien. The Great Hall’s organ, built by Rieger, dates from the opening year.

Getting There & Visiting

The Konzerthaus is at Lothringerstrasse 20, 1030 Vienna, beside the Stadtpark and about ten minutes on foot from the State Opera.

  • U-Bahn: the U4 to Stadtpark, a few minutes’ walk away.
  • Tram: lines 2, 71 and D to Schwarzenbergplatz.

There is no enforced dress code: smart casual is fine, and many guests dress up for orchestral evenings. Arrive in good time — latecomers are typically admitted only at a suitable pause in the programme.
