Browse Dates & BookOn 19 January 1919, in the ballroom of the Suvretta House hotel in St Moritz, Vaslav Nijinsky — the greatest dancer of his age, the Ballets Russes star who had scandalised Paris with L’Après-midi d’un faune and The Rite of Spring — danced in public for the last time, and called it his wedding with God. John Neumeier’s full-evening ballet begins there and spirals back through the dancer’s life as his mind gives way: Diaghilev, the mentor and lover; Romola, the wife; the brother Stanislaw, already in an asylum; and the roles that made him — the Golden Slave, the Faun, Harlequin, the Spirit of the Rose — danced by his own ghosts. Created for the Hamburg Ballet in 2000, it is Neumeier’s masterpiece, to music by Chopin, Schumann, Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich.
The Vienna State Ballet dances it for the first time this season — the premiere on 20 October 2026 is a company premiere — in Neumeier’s own sets, costumes and lighting, with the ballet’s designs after Léon Bakst and Alexandre Benois. Nathan Brock conducts. Two parts with one interval, 19:00 to about 21:30; the house offers a half-hour introduction in German before each performance.
Three dancers share the title role across the run, each with his own Romola.
Casts and conductors as announced by the Vienna State Opera on 15 October 2026. The house can change them at short notice; the names on the day are the ones that count.
At the Vienna State Opera you book by price category rather than a numbered seat: Category 1 is the front of the Parkett and the central boxes, the numbers rise as the seats move back and up, and we reserve the best available places within the category you choose. A new production for the company, priced in the house’s standard ballet range after the premiere night. Tickets for Nijinsky are listed with us from €74 to €309 by category across the run; the bands below show what each typically costs.
Prices as listed with us on 15 October 2026; each date shows its own categories and current prices. All prices include our service fee and may be above the original face value printed on the ticket. Categories 7 to 9 are restricted-view places, offered only when the house releases them. Standing room is sold by the house on the day and never through an agency.

Timing. The house lists every performance from 19:00 to about 21:30 with one interval; the audience introduction (in German) starts half an hour before curtain-up in the Gustav Mahler Hall. Doors open well before curtain-up and the house asks latecomers to wait for a suitable break, so plan to be seated ten minutes early. Our guide to how long an opera lasts covers intervals and curtain times in general.
Seats, subtitles, dress. The seating guide walks through the Parkett, the boxes, the Balkon and the Galerie; there is nothing to translate in a ballet, and the seating guide matters more than usual here because Neumeier fills the whole stage — the Parkett and the front of the Balkon see the patterns best. There is no enforced dress code — smart casual is the everyday norm and premieres and New Year’s Eve draw evening wear — see what to wear.
Around the performance. The company’s whole season — Swan Lake over the holidays, Onegin, the mixed programmes — is on the ballet page. Staying nearby makes a late finish easy: our hotels guide lists what is within a few minutes’ walk of Opernring. Every other production on sale this season is on the Vienna State Opera page and in the 2026/27 season guide.
ONE EVENT is an independent ticket agency. All tickets offered are genuine and valid, but we are not the official box office of the Vienna State Opera. Prices include our service fee and may be higher than the original face value. The full total is always shown before you pay.
The life and breakdown of Vaslav Nijinsky, the legendary Ballets Russes dancer, told backwards from his last public performance in St Moritz in January 1919: his roles, his mentor Diaghilev, his wife Romola and his brother Stanislaw appear as the memories of a mind giving way. John Neumeier created it for the Hamburg Ballet in 2000.
The house lists each performance from 19:00 to about 21:30 with one interval. A free introduction in German is given half an hour before curtain-up.
Alessandro Frola (20, 24 and 30 October), António Casalinho (22 and 27 October) and Victor Caixeta (6 and 9 November), with Ketevan Papava, Cassandra Trenary and Olga Esina as Romola. Casts can change; checked 15 October 2026.
It is a serious, adult evening about madness and desire rather than a story ballet, and the house gives no age guidance; for a family’s first ballet, Swan Lake over the holidays is the easier choice.
Listed with us from €74 (Category 6) to €309 (Category 1) across the run, with the middle categories around €140–197. Prices include our service fee and may be above the original face value; each date shows its own.
You book by category and we assign the best available seats within it. Two seats are always seated together unless a listing says otherwise; larger groups may be split, for example 2+2 or 3+1. Our seating guide explains what each part of the house is like.
Tickets are collected from our office at ONE EVENT, Opernring 1/E/536-537, 1010 Vienna, directly opposite the Vienna State Opera, on the day of the performance or one day prior (13:00–17:00, Sundays 15:00–18:00). Where e-tickets are available, we send them by email instead. The house issues tickets about a week before the performance; your booking is confirmed when you buy.
As stated in our Terms & Conditions, tickets are non-refundable and cannot be cancelled after purchase, so double-check your date and category before you confirm. Our Vienna office is happy to help with any question about your booking.
